History

In 1961, the Church of Rome called upon The Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception to open a door in the US to spread the good news. On April 5, 1962 the sisters entered the convent in Mt. Pleasant “Virgin of Miracles.” With the encouragement of the Church of Greensburg, Montessori School in Mount Pleasant, PA was formed.

In 1968, the horse barn of the old Peterson’s farm was converted into a cozy, small school capable of hosting 40 to 45 children. In 1971, the VMPA was formed, aiming to render social and financial assistance to the school for the benefit of children and the society. That same year, VMS had its first groundbreaking for a new addition, which was completed and blessed on April 8th, 1972, and is the current location of the library, music and conference rooms. To mark this special event, on April 15th, a shrine was situated at the center of the field to entrust the children, the parents, and the friends of VMS into the loving hands of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Due to increasing enrollment, another addition was needed. So in 1979, the current upper elementary classrooms were doubled in size, and Christina Hall was completed. As the VMS family continued to grow, a new Children’s House was completed in 1986. In 2010, the final  addition occurred which is the home for our lower elementary classes.

VMS has grown and operates not only to teach the academics required, but also to care, above all, for the formation of the person of tomorrow, the builder of a better society. Today the students come to us from all faiths and ethnic backgrounds.
